Modal: a textile fibre derived from wood cellulose

Modal is a man-made fibre derived from wood cellulose, primarily sourced from beech trees. This fibre is produced from wood pulp, transformed through a controlled manufacturing process. Often compared to viscose, modal stands out for its enhanced strength, its ability to remain lightweight and breathable, and its superior comfort.

Unlike some traditional fibres, modal fabric offers a silky touch and helps reduce wrinkling and shrinkage during washing. Modal® is widely developed by the Austrian company Lenzing, a recognised leader in the textile industry known for its expertise, transparency and traceability.

Modal production: innovation and closed-loop processing

The modal manufacturing process involves transforming wood pulp into yarn through a specialised spinning method. Modal is produced using a closed-loop system, allowing up to 95% of the solvent used to be recovered and reused, significantly reducing environmental impact.

Although modal production involves chemical processes, modern manufacturing methods are tightly controlled and can be non-toxic when meeting certifications such as OEKO-TEX®, FSC or PEFC. When responsibly managed, modal can be more eco-friendly than conventional cotton, particularly in terms of water usage and durability.
