How to take care of your clothes
Proper care of your clothes is very important to make them last. It's worth remembering that care accounts for more than half of a garment's environmental impact. So here are a few tips for taking care of your clothes:
Wash only when necessary
By washing your clothes less often, you'll save water and detergent, and they'll last longer. Hang your garments on a hanger and air them out for 2 to 3 hours to allow any unpleasant odors to dissipate. Unlike synthetic fabrics that retain odors, natural fibers have absorbent and breathable properties, allowing you to air your clothes instead of washing them after just one or two wears.
Wash at low temperature
Washing at 30°C is perfectly sufficient to get your clothes clean. We recommend washing natural fiber garments inside out at 30°C on a delicate cycle with a low spin speed (drum 800 to 1000 rpm). Furthermore, a 30°C wash uses half the energy of a 60°C wash.
Use a laundry bag
For wrap dresses and cardigans, we recommend washing them in a laundry bag to prevent the ties from stretching when the washing machine drum spins with other clothes. Here are a few eco-friendly laundry bag options:Living Crafts laundry bag (100% organic cotton, GOTS certified), PLIM laundry bag (100% organic cotton, made in France), and Guppy Friend laundry bag (100% polyamide, recyclable, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified).
Avoid the tumble dryer
Tumble dryers are convenient but consume a lot of energy. Air drying is preferable in a well-ventilated area, and avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. For faster drying and fewer wrinkles, hang your garments on a hanger (avoid thin metal hangers for knitwear). When ironing, iron on the reverse side or place a piece of cloth underneath to prevent the fabric from becoming shiny.
The materials that make up our clothes evolve; they are living materials. A living material is a natural material that changes over time, adapts to your body shape, develops a patina, wrinkles… It is an imperfect material, but it is a material that lives, that is beautiful and authentic, unlike synthetic materials that hardly change after machine washing and tumble drying.
Repair instead of throwing away
Don't throw away your clothes just because of a stain or a tear: always try to salvage them or have them repaired. If your clothes no longer suit you, give them to a friend or family member, or donate them to a charity. If your clothes have simply reached the end of their life, take them to a recycling bin.
Our repair service
Maintaining and repairing clothes helps to extend their lifespan and also to reduce their environmental footprint, which is why we offer our customers a repair service (snags, buttons to sew on, stitching to redo…) for their Avani clothes.
To do this, please send us an email to info@avani.ch with a photo and a short description of the problem, so that we can assess the intervention to be carried out and the cost that may be associated with it.
